How to export your inventory from RVTools
- Open RVTools and connect to your vCenter Server.
- From the File menu, choose Export all to Excel. You get one .xlsx file with a tab per inventory type.
- Drop that file above. We read the vInfo tab: vCPU, memory, disk capacity, operating system and power state of each VM.
Prefer CSV? Export the vInfo tab to CSV and drop that instead. Powered-off VMs and templates are skipped automatically.
How the estimate works
Each running server is matched to the cheapest instance on each cloud with at least the same vCPU and memory, for the processor you choose. We compare x86 families from the two latest Intel and AMD generations on each cloud, in compute, general-purpose and memory-optimised shapes, where a vCPU is a hardware thread as it is in VMware. On AWS, the 7th- and 8th-generation AMD families are left out because each of their vCPUs is a full physical core, so a one-to-one match would not be like for like.
Prices are the providers’ public on-demand list prices for the region you pick, refreshed every week. Windows servers include the Windows Server licence. Disks are priced as SSD block storage: gp3 on AWS and Premium SSD managed disks on Azure.
That makes it a fair like-for-like starting point, not a final number. Real bills move with commitments, rightsizing, licences you already own and the costs listed under “What this estimate includes and leaves out”.
Questions
Is my file uploaded?
No. The file is opened by your browser and never sent to us. We only record anonymous totals, such as the number of servers and the monthly result, to understand how the tool is used.
Which RVTools versions work?
Recent RVTools versions that export to .xlsx. Old .xls files are not supported; export again as .xlsx or CSV.
Is this a quote?
No. It is an estimate from public list prices. Negotiated discounts, credits and private pricing are not included.
